Following the films success at the 81st Academy awards the film topped the world wide box office. It grossed $16 million form 34 markets in the week following the Academy awards. Worldwide, the film has grossed over 377 million.

In north America, the first weekend the film grossed $360,018 in 10 theaters, and average of $36,002 per theater. In its second weekend it expanded to 32 theaters making $947,795 and average of $29,619 per theater. Its only a 10% drop to its first weekend of opening. Slum dog millionaire expanded into wide release on 25th december 2008 at 614 theaters and earned $5,647007. It made an increase by 43% from its success and the 81st academy awards. from 27th february to 1st of march the film made its widest release at 2,943 theaters. It grossed over $140 million at North America box office.

In india, the premiere of slumdog millionaire was on 22 january 2009. Fox searchlight released 351 prints of the film across india for the full release on 23rd january 2009. It earned 2,35,45,665 Rs in its first week at the indian box office ($2,2 million).

In the second week the film grossed to 3,04,70,752 Rs at the indian box office. 

In Europe the film was released in the UK on the 9th of january 2009, it opened second at the Uk box office, and reached number 1 in its second week, and set a UK box office record. The films taking increased by 47%, this beat billy Elliot's. Slumdog millionaire grossed 6.1 million in its first 11 days in the UK, in the following week it increased by another 7%. The film grossed up to 10.24 million in its first 17 days in the UK, and up t0 14.2 million in its 3rd week.
